FTCE Florida Social Science 6-12 Examination Information

Social Science taught in levels 6-12 are a mixture of general knowledge on topics such as geography, economics and political science. These topics are very crucial for the curriculum and educators, who wish to teach this subject, are required to be flexible and outwardly knowledgeable. The Florida Department of Education (FLDOE) requires such educators to first take the FTCE Social Exam; so they may obtain a certification which is needed to teach legally in the state.

Applicants can choose between a professional and temporary certification. Professional certifications expire after five academic years but can be renewed. Temporary certifications, however, last only for three academic years and cannot be renewed. To continue teaching, educators then must apply for a professional certification. Each certification has different eligibility criteria which have to be complied in order to take the exam.

Eligibility Requirements for FTCE Social Science Exam

To be eligible for the FTCE Social Science Exam, candidates should meet these specific eligibility requirements issued by the board:

Professional certification applicants must be:

• A Bachelor of Social Science

• A Master of Social Science

Temporary certification applicants must be:

• A Bachelor of Social Science with a 2.5 GPA

For both certifications, a fingerprint report is absolutely required. Candidates may get the certification only after a full verification of the fingerprint reports.

Examination Format of FTCE Social Science Test

As implied above, the FTCE Social Science Exam covers various topics related to Social Science. Topics to be included are:

• Geography – human environment relationship

• Economics – macro and micro economics

• Political science – U.S. constitution and political establishments

• World history

• United States History

The exam contains 120 multiple choice questions and the examinee is given 150 minutes to answer these questions. The questions are presented in several formats such as:

• Graphical query

• Completing the sentence

• Direct questioning query

• Situation analysis

• Commanding query
