FTCE Florida Middle Grades General Science 5-9 Examination Information

General Science taught in middle grades covers mostly the common knowledge regarding all the branches of science. Though the subject does not go as deep as specializations in different branches go, learning about topics which are generally different from each other can be a challenge. Educators, therefore, are required to have certain skills and capabilities in order to teach this subject. The Florida Department of Education (FLDOE) conducts the FTCE Middle Grades General Science 5-9 Exam to test such educators’ capacity to teach. Passers will obtain certifications which will allow educators to teach legally in the state.

There are two types of certification available, professional and temporary. Professional certifications are valid for five academic years and are renewable while temporary certifications are valid for only three academic tears and are non-renewable. After temporary certifications expire, educators must then apply for a professional certification to continue teaching.

Eligibility Requirements for FTCE Middle Grades General Science 5-9 Exam

The FLDOE requires applicants to first comply with certain eligibility requirements presented by the board.

Both certifications require applicants to hold a bachelor degree in Middle Grades Science. For professional certifications, applicants are also required to have a specialization in Middle Grades Science. For temporary certification, applicants minimally are required to have a 2.5 GPA in the subject.

A fingerprint report is also needed for both certifications and only after duly processing these files will the board grant the certification to the educator.

Examination Format of FTCE Florida Middle Grades General Science 5-9 Test

The FTCE Middle Grades Science 5-9 Exam covers general knowledge on the different branches of science. Listed below are 9 topics that are to appear in the exam and beside it are percentage values that represent the number of questions on the certain topic that are to appear in the exam (of total number of items).

• The structure and behavior of matter -14%

• Forces and motion -13%

• Energy and its effects- 12%

• Earth and the processes that affect it -13%

• Space science -6%

• Processes of life – 14%

• The effects of physical and biological factors on the environment – 10%

• Science learning environment – 5%

• Process skills and application of scientific inquiry -13%

The exam is composed of 120 multiple choice questions and examinees are given 150 minutes to attempt the test. The questions are also of different formats such as:

• Command

• Graphics

• Sentence Completion

• Direct Question

• Scenario

To pass the exam, examinees must study thoroughly the topics listed above as they are mostly likely to appear in the test.
