FTCE Florida Journalism 6-12 Examination Information

To ensure quality in the teaching positions in the Florida state, the Florida Department of Education (FLDOE) conducts the FTCE Journalism Exam. The passers are granted certifications by the board which allow them to teach legally in the state.

There are two types of certification available, professional and temporary. Professional certifications are long-term and are valid for five academic years and may be renewed. Temporary certifications, however, last only for three academic years and are non-renewable. Educators with this type of certification must then apply for a professional certification to continue teaching.

Examination Eligibility for FTCE Florida Journalism 6-12 Test

To be eligible to take the FTCE Journalism Exam, applicants must first meet certain eligibility requirements presented by the board.

For professional certifications, applicants must have a bachelor degree and a specialization in Journalism. For temporary certifications, applicants must have a GPA of 2.5 and a bachelor degree in Journalism. Also, both certifications require a finger print report so as to secure any criminal past of the applicant. Only then will certifications be granted if these reports are duly processed by the board.

Test Format for FTCE Florida Journalism 6-12

The FTCE Journalism 6-12 Exam covers the basic and practical knowledge in the field of media. Listed below are ten topics that are to appear in the exam. Beside it are percentage values that represent the number of questions on the certain topic in the exam.

• Journalistic style -18%

• Editing skills for print media -10%

• News judgment -15%

• News-gathering skills -10%

• Design skills -10%

• Staff management and media production -10%

• History of journalism -3%

• Law and ethics -14%

• Careers and resources in mass media -5%

• Business management and advertising -5%

The exam consists of 120 multiple-choice questions and examinees are given 150 minutes to provide answers on the test. Questions are of different formats such as:

• Command

• Sentence Completion

• Scenario

• Direct Question

• Data Analysis
