FTCE Florida Computer Science K-12 Exam Study Guide

Computer Science is one of the greatest sciences known to man since it is responsible for the shaping of both the present and future. Educators willing to teach this subject in Florida as a legal teacher are required to first take the FTCE Computer Science Exam. This exam is conducted by the Florida Department of Education (FLDOE) to grant certifications to educators who pass. These certifications allow the educators to officially teach in the state.

The FLDOE offers two kinds of certification, professional and temporary. Professional certifications are long-term and are valid for five academic years and may be renewed. Temporary certifications, however, last only for three academic years and are non-renewable. Educators with this type of certification must then apply for a professional certification to continue teaching.

Eligibility for FTCE Florida Computer Science Examination

To be eligible to take the FTCE Computer Science Exam, applicants must first meet certain eligibility requirements presented by the board.

For professional certifications, applicants must have a bachelor degree and a specialization in Computer Science. For temporary certifications, applicants must have a GPA of 2.5 and a bachelor degree in Computer Science. Also, both certifications require a finger print report so as to secure any criminal past of the applicant. Only then will certifications be granted if these reports are duly processed by the board.

Format of FTCE Florida Computer Science Exam

The FTCE Computer Science Exam tests on the applicants’ knowledge on the concepts and basics of Computer Science. The exam is composed of seven topics listed below. Beside it are the possible percentages of questions that are to appear in the exam.

• Computational thinking and problem solving -15%

• Data types and structures -15%

• Programming Logic -20%

• Programming Languages -20%

• Computer hardware, software, and networking – 10%

• Historical aspects and social issues related to computer technologies -10%

• Knowledge of computer science pedagogy -10%

The exam consists of 120 multiple choice questions and examinees are given 150 minutes to complete the test. The questions are of different formats such as:

• Sentence Completion

• Scenario

• Command

• Direct Question
