CSET Physics Exam Study Guide


The California Subject Examination for Teachers (CSET) is an exam conducted by the Commission on Teacher Credentialing (CTC) that gives certifications to educators who pass. To become a qualified educator in the state, applicant must first have the needed talents for the subject field. He/she must be well-versed with several of the physical theories and must also have decent knowledge about General Science. The CSET Physics Exam consists of three different sub tests. Applicants have to pass both subtests and if ever they fail to pass in any of the three exams, they are given the chance to retake the failed subtest but only after a period of 45 days. The score of the CSET Physics Exam is valid for 5 years.

Eligibility for CSET Physics Exam


To be eligible to appear for the CSET Physics Exam, applicants must first have to comply with certain eligibility conditions listed by the CTC board. Applicants are required to have an educational background and present needed files to the board. Applicants are also given credentials for passing the exam if they wish to teach in the middle and secondary grades. Most importantly, educators must prepare well for the exam as it is the main determining point for the qualification of the certification.

Format of CSET Physics Exam


The CSET Physics Exam appraises educators’ knowledge and capabilities on the subject area. Topics covered in the CSET Physics Exam are: motion, force, energy, momentum, thermodynamics, heat, waves, magnetism, particle theory and quantum theory. The CSET Physics Exam subtests has a mix of both multiple-choice questions and constructive response type queries hence examinees should have a decent knowledge base and good writing skills to answer the questions as accurately as possible. The maximum score achievable in the exam is 300 marks and a minimum of 220 marks are needed to pass the exam.

Scope of CSET Physics Exam


The CSET Physics Exam is an assessment of the educator’s knowledge and skills needed in teaching the subject when he/she is placed in a teaching position. Since the subject area is Physics, examinees must acquire a logical and scientific mind so as to have a compatibility with the desired teaching position.  If the educator is willing to teach in the middle and secondary grades, he/she must study hard to be sure to ace the exam.
