Praxis II Geography (5921) Examination General Information


The Education Testing Service (ETS) board conducts the Praxis II series in order to assess competent educators. Certifications granted allow educators to teach in any state they applied for. The Praxis II Series assesses an educator’s talents and capabilities that are required to be able to successfully teach the subject/s. Educators who wish to teach at a secondary level may take the Praxis II Geography Exam in order to attain the required marks needed to teach in a certain state. The Praxis II Geography Exam challenges the educator’s practical knowledge on the subject area in five different sections.

Eligibility for Praxis II Geography (5921)  Exam


To be eligible to take the Praxis II Geography exam, applicants are required to comply with certain eligibility conditions required by the ETS board. Applicants should have a bachelor degree from any state of national university. Applicants should also complete the appropriate coursework in the education. If the applicant should fail in the exam, he/she is given a chance to retake it but only after a period of 30 days.

Format of Praxis II Geography (5921) Exam


The Praxis II Geography Exam is composed of 120 multiple-choice questions. Examinees are given 120 minutes to complete the exam, hence applicants should keep in mind that one minute should be enough in answering one question. There is no penalty for incorrect answers thus examinees should aim to answer all the questions. This Geography test measures knowledge of relevant facts, the ability to analyze problems and apply principles in specific situations, and the ability to use charts, graphs, and maps across the content areas of Geographic Literacy and Tools, Physical Geography, Human Geography, Regional Geography, and Environment and Society.

Syllabus of Praxis II Geography (5921) Exam


The Geography Literacy and Tools section of the exam covers: map types and their uses; distance, direction, and scale; mental maps as a means of organizing information in a spatial context; the difference between absolute location and relative location; geographic concepts of spatial distribution and density; differences between formal, functional, and perceptual/vernacular regions; geographic models are used for organizing spatial information; apply geographic concepts to current events; and geographic tools can be used for interpreting the past, understanding the present, and planning for the future. This section has approximately 24 questions contributing to 20% of the total score.

•   The Physical Geography section of the exam covers: factors that influence weather; natural factors that influence climate; key terms used for describing weather and climate; interpret climographs; identify and locate Earth’s biomes or ecosystems; Earth’s primary spheres; geomorphic processes; geomorphic processes; differences between various landforms; the processes involved in the hydrologic cycle. This section has approximately 24 questions contributing to 20% of the total score.

•  The Human Geography section of the exam covers: spatial patterns and variations in characteristics of human populations; basic demographic indicators; interpret population pyramids on four scales; patterns of internal and international migration; characteristics of urban and rural settlements; development and diffusion of agriculture; technology affects agricultural production in diverse environments; industrialization of agriculture; concepts of nation, state, nation, state, stateless nations, multistate nations, and multinational states; identify and locate examples of nation, state, nation-state, stateless nations, multistate nations, and multinational states as recognized by political geographers. This section has approximately 30 questions contributing to 25% of the total score.

•  The Regional Geography section of the exam covers: regions can be classified according to human or physical characteristics; major regions of the world when indicated on a map or described by physical and/or human characteristics; associate the important human and physical characteristics that define the major world regions; major regions of the United States; people’s perceptions of regions differ based on their own culture and experience. This section has approximately 18 questions contributing to 15% of the total score.

•  The Environment and Society section of the exam covers: human decisions and activities modify the physical environment; interaction between human and physical systems; physical systems can have a limiting but not a determining effect on human activities; ways humans overcome the limitations of the physical environment; the positive and negative features of the physical environment affect patterns of human settlement. This section has approximately 24 questions contributing to 20% of the total score.
