NYSTCE Earth Science Examination Overview

NYSTCE Earth Science exam seeks to assess the educator’s proficiency in teaching science subject specifically in New York, especially those who have keen interest and ample knowledge in geological and earth science, in order to standardize the quality of education in the state as provided by the education board. The candidate whose capacity is proven legit and competent enough to handle the subject can then apply for certification and be given credentials for the profession. He/she will then be permitted to teach subjects related to arts, science, reading, mathematics and other general areas of education other than in core subject fields.

NSYTCE Earth Science Exam - Admission

The NYSTCE Earth Science Exam assesses the teachers’ ability in order to orient and standardize the quality of education in the area of earth science There will be two phases during the assessment, namely the initial or entry level (valid for three years) and the proficient phase or advanced level. This exam requires the applicant be a bachelor degree holder from a national or state university and must have attendance in workshops of different school programs. Under the proficient phase, he/she must have a master degree with three years of teaching experience in the field and must clear Speech and Language Disability exam.

NYSTCE Earth Science Exam - Presentation

NYSCTE Earth Science Exam includes only close ended questions. There will be 90 multiple choice questions (4 choices each) and a subjective question to be totally completed within 4 hours and will be then scaled in a range from 100 to 300, in which 220 is the least score to be qualified. A good time management is a must during the exam and if the examinee fails to reach the passing score, he/she can appear again in the same exam after the lapse of 30 days from the first exam.

NYSTCE Earth Science Exam – Course Outline

The following topics are:

•  25% Fundamentals of earth science – observation, experimentation, natural resources

•  22% Atmosphere and its system – precipitation, display data, weather forecasting, cloud formation, etc.    

•  18% Space and its systems – solar system, galaxy, star life cycle, heavenly bodies, etc.      

•  14% Geological system – evolution of life, geological time scale, crustal movements, water erosion, etc.

•  11% Water system – properties of water and ocean, currents and waves, etc.

*10% weightings in the NYSTCE Earth Science exam will be from the subjective query of the topic “geological system”
