CSET Physical Education Exam Study Guide


All educators aiming for a teaching position in the state of California are first required to take the California Subject Examination for Teachers (CSET) to obtain a certification from the Commission on Teacher Credentialing (CTC). A certification is needed in order to practice in the state legally as an educator. When applying to become a Physical Education educator, applicants must both be physically and theoretically fit in order to pass the CSET Physical Education Exam. The exam is composed of three different subtests with separate markings. Applicant must pass all tests in order to obtain a certification. If he/she fails on a particular subtest, he/she is given the chance to retake the exam but only after a period of 45 days. Scores of the CSET Physical Education Exam are valid for 5 years.

Eligibility for CSET Physical Education Exam


To be eligible to take the CSET Physical Education Exam, candidates have to first fulfil certain eligibility criterion presented by the board. Only after satisfying these conditions will the candidate be allowed to take the exam. Applicants are required to obtain certain competencies and skills in the subject in which they are supposed to take. Generally, the credential of the CSET is for the teachers who are interested to teach in the middle and secondary grades. Aspiring educators should be well-prepared for the CSET Physical Education Exam since two subtests are required to be passed so as to obtain certification.

Format of CSET Physical Education Exam


The CSET Physical Education Exam assesses the educator’s physical prowess and theoretical knowledge relating to the subject. Topics covered in the CSET Physical Education Exam are: professional concepts, human growth and development, principles of human movement, mentality and sociological effect on human movement, concepts and various forms of movement, integration and evaluation of various principles. Detailed topics also included in the CSET Physical Education Exam are: philosophies, research, fashion in the field of physical fitness, application of kinematics on human body and movements, forms of dances, gymnastics, aqua gymnastic, defence activities like fencing, karate and wrestling.

These topics are very important for the exam hence applicants should study hard and make sure that they will not miss a crucial topic. The exam consists of three different subtests and each subtest consists of 40 multiple-choice questions and 2 constructed-response questions (except subtest III, which has only 1 constructed-response question). Examinees should have a great knowledge database with good-decision making skills and also writing skills. Constructed-response questions are to be marked by a special educator from the board itself.

The maximum score for each subtest is capped at 300 and a minimum of 220 marks are needed to pass the exam and be qualified for a certification.

The CSET Physical Education Exam tests an educator’s knowledge and capabilities that will determine the quality of education he/she can offer. Educators should be able to display these abilities and prove their worth in the exam hence they should study hard and be well-prepared for the exam.
