Praxis II Pennsylvania Grades 4–8 Subject Concentration: Mathematics (5158) Exam General Information
The purpose of the Pennsylvania Grades 4−8 Subject Concentration: Mathematics test is to assess whether the entry-level middle school teacher has the content knowledge that is important, necessary, and needed at time of entry to the profession in order to teach mathematics.
The examinee will be required to understand and work with mathematical concepts, to reason mathematically, to make conjectures, and to see patterns. Additionally, the examinee will be expected to solve problems by integrating knowledge from different areas of mathematics, to use various representations of concepts, to solve problems that have several solution paths, and to develop mathematical models and use them to solve real-world problems.
The test is not designed to be aligned with any particular school mathematics curriculum, but it is intended to be consistent with the recommendations of national studies on mathematics education such as Principles and Standards for School Mathematics (2000), by the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM), Program Standards for the Initial Preparation of Middle Grades Mathematics Teachers (2012), by the Council for the Accreditation of Educator Preparation (CAEP), and the Pennsylvania Core Mathematics Standards (2013).
Praxis II Pennsylvania Grades 4–8 Subject Concentration: Mathematics (5158) Examination Format
The Praxis II Pennsylvania Grades 4–8 Subject Concentration: Mathematics (5158) Exam is composed of 60 selected-response questions and examinees are given a set amount of time depending on the calendar period. Through August 2015, a time limit of 1 hour and 30 minutes is given. Starting September 2015, the time limit is increased to 2 hours.
Scientific or four-function calculator use is permitted.
This test may contain some questions that will not count toward your score.
