The Educational Testing Service conducts the Praxis II Family and Consumer Sciences Exam in order to evaluate educators’ skills and capabilities needed in the subject matter. Passing the Praxis II Family and Consumer Sciences Exam grants educators certifications that are needed to teach in any state in the USA. The exam is a content knowledge test that is designed to determine whether the examinee has the knowledge and skills necessary for teaching.

Eligibility for Praxis II Family and Consumer Sciences (5122) Exam


To be eligible to take the Praxis II Family and Consumer Sciences exam, applicants are required to comply with certain eligibility conditions presented by the ETS board. Applicants should have a bachelor degree from any state of national university. Applicants should also complete the appropriate coursework in the education. In the off chance that the applicant should fail in the exam, he/she is given a chance to retake it but only after a period of 30 days.

Format of Praxis II Family and Consumer Sciences (5122) Exam


The Praxis II Economics Exam is composed of 120 multiple-choice questions and examinees are given 2 hours to attempt the exam. These questions are grouped into seven different sections that correspond to a certain subject area regarding the Family and Consumer Sciences: The Family; Human Development Through the Life Span; Consumer Economics and Resource Management; Nutrition, Food Science, and Wellness; Textiles and Apparel; Housing and Living Environments; Family and Consumer Sciences Education; and Career, Community, and Family Connections. Examinees should remember that not all questions are marked.

Syllabus of Praxis II Family and Consumer Sciences (5122) Exam


The Family section of the exam covers: Family Structures, Family Functions, Family Stages, and Factors Affecting Family Relationships. There are approximately 18 questions for the topic which contributes to 15% of the total score.

•  The Human Development Through the Life Span section of the exam covers: Theories of development within the context of family matters; Development tasks and processes; Variations in development requiring special resources and responses; Interpersonal relationships; Purposes and patterns of communication; and Stages of Physical, intellectual, and cognitive development across the life span. There are approximately 19 questions for the topic which contributes to 16% of the total score.

•  The Consumer Economics and Resource Management section of the exam covers: Consumer rights and responsibilities; Consumer resources for decision-making; Financial planning and management; Consumer protection; Management processes and techniques; Management theory; Selection of services and products. There are approximately 17 questions for the topic which contributes to 14% of the total score.

•  The Nutrition, Food Science, and Wellness section of the exam covers: Factors influencing nutritional needs; Functions and sources of nutrients; Nutritional guidelines; Related health problems; Sociocultural aspects of food; Meal/food management; Food preparation; Food storage and preservation. There are approximately 17 questions for the topic which contributes to 14% of the total score.

•  The Textiles and Apparel section of the exam covers: Wardrobe managements; Ways in which fiber, fabric, texture, pattern, and finish can affect appearance; Textiles; Appropriate procedures for care of textiles. There are approximately 7 questions for the topic which contributes to 6% of the total score.

•  The Housing and Living Environments of the exam covers: Internal and external factors that affect housing choices; and Housing. There are approximately 10 questions for the topic which contributes to 8% of the total score.

•  The Family and Consumer Sciences Education of the Exam covers: Historical, social, and economics foundations of the profession; Philosophical and professional concerns; Characteristics of family/consumer education; Planning, implementation, and evaluation; Classroom management strategies to support a positive learning environment; Appropriate criteria and standards to identify student learning. There are approximately 23 questions for the topic which contributes to 19% of the total score.

•  The Career, Community and Family Connections section of the exam covers: Careers in Family and Community services careers; Job-acquisition skills; Professional and ethical relations with families. There are approximately 10 questions for the topic which contributes to 8% of the total score.
