The California Subject Examination for Teachers (CSET) is an exam which certifies educators so they may be able to teach in the state as an official educator. Educators wishing to teach in the field of performing arts are required to first take the California Subject Examination for Teachers. Applicants must be competent enough to pass the exam and attain the certification from the board. The CSET Art Exam is crucial test o confirm the candidate’s cognitive skills and competency in the said field.

The exam contains two subtests which covers different topics from different subject areas. If the candidates fails to pass any of the said subtests, then he may opt to retake the particular subtest again only after a period of 45 days. CSET Art Exam scores are valid for 5 years.

Eligibility for CSET Art Exam


To be eligible to take the CSET Art Exam, candidates have to first fulfil certain eligibility criterion presented by the board. Only after satisfying these conditions will the candidate be allowed to take the exam. Applicants are required to obtain certain competencies and skills in the subject in which they are supposed to take. Generally, the credential of the CSET is for the teachers who are interested to teach in the middle and secondary grades. Aspiring educators should be well-prepared for the CSET Art Exam since two subtests are required to be passed so as to obtain certification.

Format of CSET Art Exam


The CSET Art Exam assesses the candidate’s prowess needed to be able to teach the subject efficiently. Topics covered in the exam are: development of artistic qualities, creativity in artist, role of history and culture in arts, aesthetic perception of art, connectivity and relation of art, role of history and theology in development of art. These topics are also important for the exam: elements and principles of art, origination and 2D art and it’s designing, 3D art and it’s designing, visual and historical value, career in art, and related field.

Most of the exam is composed of multiple-choice questions hence examinees should have good decision-making skills with a decent knowledge base. Constructed-response questions are also present so examinees should also have good writing skills. The exam has a total of 300 marks out of which 220 marks are required to pass. It is strongly advised that future examinees should invest in a well-made study guide to be well-prepared for the exam.

The CSET Art Exam gives credentials to the educators who pass for their skills and talent in the subject. Candidates should strive to answer all the questions as possible. Multiple-choice questions are checked by a computer while subjective questions are marked by special educators hired by the board.
